Doctor Who - The Third Doctor Adventures Volume Three

Starring Tim Treloar, Katy Manning, George Watkins, John Banks, Amy Newton, Nicholas Briggs, Robin Weaver, Iain Batchelor, Robert Hands, Richard Derrington, Ian Cunningham & Jake Dudman. Features the episodes: -The Conquest Of Far by Nicholas Briggs. -Storm Of The Horofax by Andrew Smith. Directed by Nicholas Briggs. After two very successful previous volumes, it was a dead cert that Tim Treloar was going to be back as the Third Doctor for another set of adventures. And this third set is something very special: for the first time since, incredibly, 1974, the Third Doctor is back up against the Daleks! As well as that, we have a good old-fashioned Earth-based story alongside it. And while I'd say that this third volume wasn't quite as strong as the second set (released last November), this third volume has two enjoyable, and, at times, surprising stories, that are an enjoyable recreation of early 1970's Doctor Who. The first story, The Conquest Of Far, is c...

Torchwood - Aliens Among Us 1

Starring John Barrowman, Eve Myles, Kai Owen, Paul Clayton, Alexandria Riley, Jonny Green, Stephen Critchlow, Rachel Atkins, Ruth Lloyd, Sophie Colquhoun, Rhian Marston-Jones, Lu Corfield, Rhys Whomsley, Sharon Morgan, David Sibley, Sam Beart, Anthony Boyle, Sam Jones & Wilf Scolding. Features the episodes: -Changes Everything by James Goss. -Aliens & Sex & Chips & Gravy by James Goss. -Orr by Juno Dawson. -Superiority Complex by AK Benedict. Directed by Scott Handcock. Torchwood is back! After securing the Torchwood licence in 2015, Big Finish have quickly proven themselves adept at producing new and interesting Torchwood material. After successfully celebrating Torchwood's 10th anniversary last year, Big Finish have now gone one step further: producing an official continuation, an official fifth series, to follow on from Miracle Day. And, despite several people bemoaning the fact that 'it's not on TV', this has gone down a storm. After the ...

Hamlet

Starring Alexander Vlahos, Miles Richardson, Tracey Childs, Terry Molloy, Daniel Brocklebank, Deirdre Mullins, Samuel Barnett, Jolyon Westhorpe, Geoffrey Breton, Barnaby Edwards, Youssef Kerkour, Alex Jordan & James Joyce. Written by William Shakespeare & Adapted by Justin Richards. Directed by Scott Handcock. This is something new. Big Finish have, for nearly ten years now, being releasing adaptations of classic literary works, starting with The Phantom Of The Opera back in 2008. Since then, they've tackled a huge range of texts: Stevenson's Treasure Island, Wilde's The Picture Of Dorian Gray, Stoker's Dracula, Shelley's Frankenstein, even Doyle's The Hound Of The Baskervilles for their Sherlock Holmes line. But this is something very different to those productions: because, until now, Big Finish have never tackled Shakespeare before. Sure, they've dallied in that period of history before, with Shakespeare himself guesting in two Doctor Who re...

Where To Start With Big Finish? - A Beginners Guide To Doctor Who

With this, I thought I'd offer some thoughts on an issue that a lot of people bring up. Where do you start with Big Finish? It's an important question, as so many people want to start a Big Finish collection, but then find that there are so many releases, and it's almost impossible to choose. So, if you're new to Big Finish, I'd recommend using this as a guide for entry points, and then going on from there to finding other releases to listen to. Technophobia - Starring David Tennant & Catherine Tate If you didn't expect this one to be on the list, then I'd ask what was wrong with you. While not being a personal fan of the David Tennant era, I can't deny that, for a lot of people, he is the most popular of all the 21st Century Doctors, and was responsible for the show being given pretty much carte-blanche by the BBC. And while Technophobia isn't what I'd call amazing, it features a clever little premise, compactly told with some strong perf...

Lyric Dissection - Born This Way (Lady Gaga)

One Nerd. One Laptop. One Infinite Library of Music. One series taking the piss out of music. Why, what else would you think I'd do? It doesn't matter if you love him, or capital H-I-M I knew that Middle Eastern capitals had odd names, but I've never heard of HIM before. Is it a good holiday destination?  Just put your paws up 'Cause you were born this way, baby Are you singing to dogs again? Because if you're a human with paws, I'd say that's a serious deformity. My mama told me when I was young We are all born superstars Yes, it just so happens we waste that talent by breathing. She rolled my hair and put my lipstick on In the glass of her boudoir In which she milked the cows and fed the chickens. "There's nothing wrong with loving who you are" She said, "'Cause He made you perfect, babe" Clearly this child was sculpted out of clay by some famous artist. Either that or Gaga needs to have the talk about the birds and the b...

The Spotify Chart Rankings - Week Commencing 26th June 2017

As we arrive at the end of June, we find ourselves facing the exact same chart as we did last week. So, in the spirit of the mind-numbing repetitive monotony that is the charts at the moment, I've decided that this week's chart will be recycled entirely from last week. Why? Because I'm a pretentious bastard that believes that this will 'make a point'. Also because I'm lazy and this is the way I'm doing it. 10. Despacito: Remix - Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee & Justin Bieber (Chart Position - 1) Do I need to repeat myself again? This is poor on all levels, and, worse, feels like a very bad case of cultural appropriation. I'm not quite sure what to make of this song, because it just feels offensive more than anything else. I sincerely doubt this song's going to disappear in the next few weeks, so I'll have to try and come up with some new criticism I haven't mentioned before. For now, the word mind-numbing springs to mind. 9. I'm The ...
